just a small word of warning to all hawk flyers. My excellant male harris taz was flying in the same area we visit alot when tragedy struck he landed on a small electricty pylon and got more or less frazzled. The whole thing happend in seconds it was heart breaking.I have never heard of this thing happening and have never had it happen to me in all the times i have flew a bird.Has anyone else had a bird killed in this way
Seems Harris haws are more prone to this - they float onto the perch with their wings out and are more likely to make a short circuit between the wires. Goshawks seem to close their wings as they are landing and have shorter wings too.
If you fly near power lines and your hawk starts using them to perch move on to fresh ground. Its not worth the risk. I have a few poles at one end of my ground but my Harris doesn't like landing on them. I still prefer to keep clear of them.
