Anyone got any views on buying a older bird that hunts my mate is thinking about doing just that ive said train one yourself ,i keep saying who gets rid of a good bird any views welcome.Iam going to show him all your views for or against
Where abouts are you based? I'm down south in Brighton, and if you are in the Sussex area I can recomend my local centre, Huxley's Experience in Horsham; they breed Harris's ans lots of other falcons , owls etc. I got my Harris from them and he is a superb bird. (I am not being bias, as we all are to our charges) but even Julian at the centre says that I should be very proud of my bird. They breed excellent stock. If you want more details let me know and I will gladly pass them on. Clive
People do get rid of good birds - sometimes. They may be moving on to a falcon, goshawk or other species. Sometimes family problems or job changes are the reason.
However, there's leass good uns than bad uns. Only way to really tell is go out hunting and see how it performs, what it's manners are like and is it ok with dogs. If you can get a reliable recomendation that helps.
Trouble with Harris hawks is that they are too easy to train. You can fly them with lots of bad habits and get away with it. Do the same with a Gos and you'll soon be an expert with your telemetry.
