There are no hard and fast rules about when to moult, some will start soon, I did read that someone had put theirs down already i think.

I will probably put Fester down to moult in Late March, early April.

When you moult your bird out, it is important not to stress him out, and also to make sure that he has as much to eat as he wants. I normally feed him once a day, and just keep an eye on him, remove any meat he hasn't eaten and feed him again.

Moulting takes a lot of energy from the bird, if he does not have enough to eat he may get "pinched" or malformed feathers, which will affect him the next season, best avoided.

You can continue to man your bird during the moult if you wish, it makes the retrain the next season even shorter, although with Harrises, it only takes a couple of days anyway.

Happy hunting

Owen
